Personal Injury Lawyers in Sydney

Injury claims in NSW run through several different schemes, and the rules for each are not the same. A workplace injury is usually handled under workers compensation, a road accident under the CTP green slip scheme, and a fall in a shop or public place as a public liability claim. Medical negligence, superannuation and TPD claims follow their own processes again.

Because of this, it often pays to choose a firm that does a lot of work in your type of claim. Sydney has a number of firms that focus on acting for injured people, many with offices in the CBD and in suburbs such as Parramatta and Liverpool. Most offer a free first assessment, and time limits apply to most claims, so it is sensible to get advice early rather than wait until treatment ends.

Work injuries in NSW

If you are hurt at work, tell your employer and see your doctor, who can complete a certificate of capacity. The Independent Review Office recommends giving the insurer a completed claim form along with that certificate. IRO can also help if you think your employer has not notified the insurer, or if you do not understand the insurer’s response.

Workers compensation has its own rules about legal help and costs, which differ from other injury claims. Ask any firm you speak with how it handles workers compensation matters before you sign anything.

Questions to ask before you sign

Ask who will run your claim day to day and how often you will hear from them. A written costs agreement should explain what you pay if the claim succeeds and what happens if it does not, including any disbursements such as medical reports. Some lawyers hold Law Society accreditation as specialists in personal injury, which you can check on the Accredited Specialist register.

Keep copies of medical records, receipts and time off work from the start. Good records often make a claim simpler to prove and can shorten the time it takes.
